The Brooklyn Nets have had plenty of great players wear the Nets uniform over the history of the franchise, both in New Jersey and in their current home at Barclays Center. Brooklyn is hoping to put forth a better product for the fanbase next season after one of the worst seasons that the team has seen, but it could be time to note how many greats have played for the organization.

"Scoring comes so easy for him it’s almost ridiculous, as Kevin Durant is a 7-footer with ballhandling, quickness and a pristine jumper that he can hit from legitimately anywhere on the floor," Frank Urbina wrote for HoopsHype when discussing Kevin Durant, the third-best small forward in NBA history. In addition to Durant, the next player also spent time with the Nets even though he is mostly known for his time with the Philadelphia 76ers.

"He was 26 by the time he made his NBA debut after years in the ABA, so Julius Erving would rank far higher in the statistical categories had he spent his whole career in the Association," Urbina wrote on Erving, affectionately known in NBA circles as Dr. J. Erving played for the Nets when the team was in New York, prior to moving to New Jersey, but there is one more player to mention on this top-20 small forward list.

"Paul Pierce was a beastly scorer in his prime, one who could fill it up from all three levels and score on even the most elite of defenders," Urbina wrote on Paul Pierce, who had already made his name known prior to coming to the Nets. In reference to this list, Durant ranked third, Erving ranked fourth, and Pierce is ranked as the 13th-best small forward in the history of the Association.

Ultimately, the Nets are still in the midst of their rebuild so next season may not pleasant for the fanbase to see given that some of the youngest players still have some growing to do. Regardless of how next season turns out, members of the Nets fanbase will be able to hold on to the fact that some of the greatest small forwards in NBA history played for their team.

Thirty years after the U.S. women's national team won the gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, going 2-1 over China, and a month after the 2026 World Cup ended its run across the American continents, soccer has returned to the heart of the Classic City at Sanford Stadium.

A record-breaking 25,433 fans packed the metal bleacher seats under the blistering 93-degree setting sun, curving around the west end zone and north side of the stadium to watch the Georgia Bulldogs face the James Madison Dukes to open their home schedule.

Georgia has been a hotbed for soccer since Tiffeny Milbrett broke the deadlock created by China’s Sun Wen in the 68th minute of the biggest match on grass and made history for America in front of approximately 76,000 people.

Three decades of all-aged girls have come through the Peach State, which has produced the fourth-most NWSL players. Three of 23 women on the 2019 World Cup roster hailed from the metro-Atlanta area, including Emily Sonnett, who currently plays with the NJ/NY Gotham FC; Morgan Gautrat née Brian; and Kelley O’Hara.

Which made Thursday night something special to witness, especially for this next generation of girls soccer players. Girls like Emerson Finch, Harper Eubanks, Mattie Raborn and Charlotte Peyton, who all play for Augusta Arsenal.

“I didn’t really get to see the World Cup as much,” Eubanks, who is going into seventh grade, said. “So, seeing the women play, it’s like an inspiration of like who I want to be when I grow up.”

Raborn, also in seventh grade, echoed her friend’s take. They have dreams, and to see something this cool happen to the women on the Georgia roster only gives their young hearts a swell of hope for their own futures – though that’s still a long time away.

“I just feel really proud of them,” Peyton, another seventh grader whose favorite player is Lamine Yamal, said about the Georgia players. “I know they’ve come a long way and that’s also who I want to be when I grow up. It’s really inspirational, like Harper said.”

Graduate goalkeeper Jordan Brown smiled from ear to ear when she was told what Eubanks and Peyton said.

"You always want to be the inspiration for them," Brown said. "I know when I was younger and I was growing up, I was like, oh my gosh I hope I can just even touch the college field one day. Being able to break the (attendance) record and have a good performance at the same time, being able to show the girls they can get to this moment, they can get to this level if they just keep going. It's really awesome to be (someone's) inspiration."

Sophomore forward Mya Townes agreed.

"Some of our team, we talk about recognizing that we are living in answered prayers," Townes said. "I think that's such a big thing, not only for me, but for a lot of our team to realize the magnitude of what we are doing ... because a lot of people wouldn't think they can get here too."

For Bill Carter, a coach at the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association who had called the night of practice off and brought his 13U boys and several others in attendance with him, Thursday night was a full circle moment. Because Carter attended the 1996 World Cup in Athens. He’d also been to a game in Birmingham, Ala.

“The atmosphere was a little more electric as the U.S. was playing,” Carter, an Army veteran and former soccer player himself, said. “A little different looking stadium, too, but it was exciting. Such a good game then.

“But tonight the fans are excited. You see them watching the game. I mean,” Carter gestured to the stands below him as we stood on the concourse. “You see the kids that are just really engaged in the game. 30 years ago, it was the same thing. A bunch of kids were there. Now, they’re parents, and they’re dragging their kids here.”

"I think the best part of games like this, is hearing the little kids screels and screams and what not," head coach Keidane McAlpine said. "That's the best part of the game because you know, some way, somehow, there is an imprint that's being made, that's happening in that moment, and we got all that tonight."

Carter considers it to be a blessing to be in a state like Georgia that cares so much about women’s soccer. In 2028, the NWSL will be returning to Atlanta – Carter still remembers the Atlanta Beat and the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league from the late-2000s.

There’s been a massive change in the support of women’s sports since the rise of WNBA superstars Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers. If you looked out at the NCAA record-setting crowd tonight, just as many men were in attendance as women, and Madison County high school senior athletes Sadie Smith and Eva Czaplinski colored themselves impressed.

Georgia defeated James Madison, 6-0. Goals were scored by sophomore forward Mya Townes, senior midfielder Honoka Hamano (2), sophomore midfielder Ava Stack, sophomore midfielder Mona Childs and freshman midfielder Leila Avila.

The New York Jets are one team that could be intrigued by Pittsburgh Steelers veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph as a trade target, according to Jake Asman of ESPN Radio in New York.

“The Jets could be in the market for a veteran QB… Mason Rudolph’s name has come up,” Asman said, via 93.7 The Fan’s Donny Chedrick.

Asman said the Jets could call the Steelers if they want a vet behind Geno Smith. He added that Aaron Glenn won’t want to count on Cade Klubnik saving his job.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was on the field for Thursday night’s preseason game against the 49ers.

But if you blinked, you would’ve missed it.

Herbert’s exhibition debut with Mike McDaniel as his play-caller lasted just three snaps, with the Chargers going three-and-out on their first offensive possession.

Omarion Hampton lost a yard on the first play from scrimmage. Then Herbert completed a 9-yard pass to tight end Charlie Kolar while rolling to his left. But on third-and-2, Herbert’s downfield pass to Ladd McConkey was well off and incomplete.

With the ball at the Los Angeles 43, the club elected to punt.

Trey Lance came in to relieve Herbert at quarterback on the Chargers’ second drive later in the first quarter.

CRAMERTON — One-year wonder? It may be just one game, but Stuart Cramer football sought to put any idea of such to rest.

After winning nine games last fall, Cramer picked up where it left off in its 2026 opener, earning a dominant 42-6 win over Forestview.

Though played at Stuart Cramer High Stadium, the Storm were designated the road team as work continues at Forestview’s Joe Alala Stadium.

Cramer scored 35 first-half points, reaching the end zone on four of its five possessions in the opening 24 minutes.

The Storm set the tone with a physical 8-play, 69-yard drive capped by a Brayden Fortenberry 2-yard touchdown run. Gifted with great field possession on its next possession, Cramer made it pay off as quarterback Cam Stillwell found wideout Landon Lee for a 25-yard TD.

Standout tight end Qualteau Hawkins then got in on the act, Stillwell hitting him for a 17-yard TD to extend the Cramer lead to 21-0. Camden Lee added a 10-yard TD run, before Tahj Whitley capped the Storm first-half barrage with a 39-yard fumble return for a TD.

Cooper McMillan scored the only Cramer points of the second half on a 1-yard TD plunge.

A Polaris Newsome 47-yard TD run with just under three minutes remaining allowed Forestview to narrowly escape being shut out.

Cramer heads to North Gaston in Week 2, seeking to go 2-0 for a second year in a row. Meanwhile, Forestview travels to East Gaston.

The Miami Dolphins will take on the New York Giants on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium for their second matchup of the preseason, but before that game kicks off, the two teams met at the Baptist Health Training Complex for a joint practice.

According to those on scene, Jeff Hafley's team struggled throughout the session, as New York, who also has a new head coach in 2026, dominated on the defensive side of things.

For those who weren't in attendance for this practice, here are some clips from fans, media members and the team.

No. 2 for No. 1.

Fernando Mendoza pro debut came and went without any issues in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. On Aug. 20, the Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback was afforded the opportunity for an encore performance in preseason Week 2.

The No. 1 overall pick's second game for the silver-and-black is now in the history books, meaning the reviews are starting to trickle in. How did he play? Do the Raiders have a quarterback competition brewing that they aren't aware of?

In a sentence: Welcome to the NFL, rook.

Those questions are natural in a world where instant gratification is the norm, especially after Vegas invested the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft in Mendoza. Excitement for the future runs high this time of year and it's hard to blame anyone for that. The rookie class that was once considered underwhelming in April is now shining bright in August.

Kirk Cousins might have the Raiders QB1 spot for now, but did Mendoza do anything to close that gap against the Texans in Houston?

How did Mendoza fare in his second NFL preseason game? Here's a breakdown of the rookie's performance.

Fernando Mendoza Raiders preseason Week 2 grade

Mendoza lived a charmed life at Indiana last season in college football. That won't be the case in the NFL, even against backups.

The headline is the pick-six, which he tossed to Wade Woodaz on Vegas' opening drive. Mendoza was drifting to his left and worked back over the middle of the field, allowing Woodaz to step in for the easy interception.

80-YARD PICK-SIX 😯

The Texans take it to the house off the Fernando Mendoza INT! pic.twitter.com/NpAzS3dYCT

— ESPN (@espn) August 21, 2026

And 80 yards later, the Texans were celebrating the gifted touchdown. Being late is never good. Being late over the middle is even worse.

Luckily for Mendoza, that is a throw he'll learn from as he finds that the closing speed is at another level in the pros.

Mendoza worked under center multiple times, something he never did in college. From a footwork perspective, he passed that test. With his arm, the rookie showed some zip on the ball, evidenced by an early completion to Jalen Nailor for 22 yards on a second-and-long.

Fernando Mendoza just threw an absolute rocket in the breadbasket of Jalen Nailor pic.twitter.com/4Z3xin4b7a

— SM Highlights (@SMHighlights1) August 21, 2026

Yet that was one of the rare occasions when he had help from the team around him. The protection up front didn't hold throughout the first half, resulting in the rookie taking a few hits – like this big one from the rookie, Kayden McDonald.

KMAC WITH THE SACK 😮‍💨

📺: @nflonespnpic.twitter.com/kOks1uMcrW

— Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) August 21, 2026

Mendoza's stat line would've looked a lot better if Malik Benson didn't register two key drops that turned a pair of first downs into a pair of punts. If Benson hangs onto the ball, the narrative is about Mendoza's ability to overcome adversity.

Malik Benson drops ball that was right to his hands

Could have been a big play, #Raiders forced to punt instead pic.twitter.com/0H7FjQw0DE

— Raiders Lead (@RaidersLead) August 21, 2026

Fair or not, the prevailing line of thinking because of those drops is that Mendoza stunk it up on Thursday night. Mix in the interception and you have the "bust" label being thrown around. However, it's important to remember that this is just his second preseason contest and if there was ever a time for mistakes – it's now.

All in all, Mendoza was fine. He didn't secure a gold jacket on Thursday night, but he also didn't ensure he'll be out of the league by this time next year. He has led the Raiders to just two scoring drives during his preseason action, a sign that he isn't ready to lead this Raiders team yet.

 Tackett vs. Gracie

UFC BJJ 10 will have two title bouts, a return of one of their biggest stars, and a flyweight title tournament. To add to that, these top Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) stars will all be competing in a completely new fighting surface. The deep UFC BJJ 10 card happens on TONIGHT (Thursday, August 20, 2026) inside the UFC’s Meta Apex venue in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The no gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) event will stream LIVE on YouTube, starting at 8 p.m. ET. You can watch the live stream for free on the video embedded below.

UFC BJJ 10 Preview: 2 title bouts, a flyweight tournament, and a smaller ‘Bowl’

UFC BJJ 10 will be headlined by one of the faces of the promotion in Andrew Tackett, who will be looking to go 7-0 and defend his welterweight title for the fourth straight time. He faces Jonnatas Gracie — unrelated to the jiu-jitsu family — who is currently 4-0 under the UFC BJJ / FPI banner. The second title bout will feature UFC BJJ champ Rebeca Lima taking on two-time no gi world champ Brianna Ste-Marie.

The card will also kick off a tournament to crown the inaugural flyweight champion, and it will feature ADCC double champ Adele Fornarino and UFC BJJ bantamweight champion Cassia Moura on opposite sides of the bracket. The pair of pound-for-pound talents are all in on this tournament, as Moura will be looking to become a two-division champion, while Fornarino has decided to withdraw from the prestigious ADCC 2026 event for this title opportunity.

The rest of the stacked card will also feature several BJJ champs and popular figures like William Tackett, Jalen Fonacier and Danielle Kelly, along with a promising scrap between Vagner Rocha and Andy Varela.

Outside of the stacked card, UFC BJJ 10 will also debut a smaller bowl, with steeper walls, which grapplers will now have to adjust to. It’ll be interesting to see if a smaller surface can push more action, while still preventing all those resets that are far too common in traditional jiu-jitsu mats. The change comes after the new and expanded UFC/Meta Apex launched with a bigger audience capacity.

South Africa fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu kicks a conversion against Wales in Cardiff last season (Paul ELLIS)

Springbok legend Victor Matfield believes the current South Africa team is the "greatest we have ever had".

That opinion will be put to the test over four consecutive weekends, starting on Saturday, when the green and gold face their greatest adversaries, the New Zealand All Blacks.

Different Johannesburg stadiums will host the first and third internationals, Cape Town the second and American city Baltimore the last.

This is a clash of juggernauts. South Africa have won the last two Rugby World Cups, New Zealand the two before that. Between them they have won seven of the 10 global tournaments.

South Africa have also won the last two editions of the Rugby Championship, New Zealand nine of the 11 earlier editions.

Including their first meeting in Dunedin on the south island of New Zealand in 1921, there have been 110 Tests between them. New Zealand won 63, South Africa 43 and four were drawn.

Matfield helped South Africa win the 2007 World Cup and, for many subsequent seasons, formed a famed second-row partnership with the abrasive Bakkies Botha.

"The Springboks always find a way to win," says the 49-year-old former star who has become a TV analyst and podcaster.

Referring to an unimpressive 17-10 one-off Test win in Argentina this month, he said "the Springboks did not play well, they made a lot of mistakes, but they succeeded".

The side that confronts New Zealand will contain only two starters from that match -- fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and veteran lock Eben Etzebeth.

While Etzebeth was an automatic choice, head coach Rassie Erasmus conceded it was difficult to choose between Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Manie Libbok and Handre Pollard for the playmaker role.

"It is always a tough call... Sacha has done wonderful things when he plays for us. He was the fly-half last year when we beat them."

Libbok is on the bench while there is no place this time round for double World Cup winner Pollard, the most conservative of the trio in field play but a prolific goal kicker.

- Captain Du Toit -

"It is a massive Test series and how we start is very important. There is time to come back, but it is always better to win the first one," said Erasmus as he admitted to being nervous.

World Rugby Player of the Year and flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit will lead the Springboks with regular captain Siya Kolisi given more time to fully recover from a hamstring injury.

New Zealand head coach Dave Rennie succeeded sacked Scott Robertson in March and admits he and his team are on a steep learning curve as they seek to dominate world rugby again.

He, like Erasmus, confessed to a lot of soul searching before naming his team just two hours before the Springboks revealed their hand.

"There have been a lot of guys in good form, massive competition for places, and there were a handful of spots that took a fair bit of discussion. I mean the second row especially."

Fabian Holland replacing fellow lock Patrick Tuipulotu is the only change to the team that started a convincing Nations Championship win over Ireland in Auckland last month.

Marketed as the "Greatest Rivalry", the organisers say it is "a series like no other", with a trophy to match, which was unveiled in midweek.

Should the series be drawn, the trophy, which consists of two magnetic halves, can be split and shared.

Replacements: Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Gerhard Steenekamp, Zachary Porthen, Cobus Wiese, Andre Esterhuizen, Marco van Staden, Cobus Reinach, Manie Libbok
