Getty ImagesIRVINE, Calif. - The minnows are swimming with the sharks in the FIFA World Cup.
In the opening 11 days of the competition, there have been plenty of surprises by underdogs teams.
Quite appropriately, a team named the Blue Sharks, who hail from a country with a population of 550,000, has stolen the spotlight while becoming the darlings of the 48-team tournament.
Interestingly, Cape Verde, which made its World Cup debut six days ago, hasn’t won a game. But then again, it hasn't lost one as well.
Cape Verde, comprised of 10 volcanic islands, is located off the coast of western Africa.
On Monday, June 15, Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the FIFA world rankings, pulled off a major upset, as it battled current European champion and second-ranked Spain to a 0-0 draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
On Sunday, June 21, the Blue Sharks were at it again, overcoming a one-goal deficit in the second half to play to a 2-2 deadlock against two-time World Cup champ Uruguay at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Kevin Pina connected off a free kick to score the team's first-ever World Cup goal to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Trailing 2-1 in the 61st minute, Helio Varela tallied the equalizer.
“This is something we owe to other smaller national teams,” Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitao Brito said. “Teams that struggled to qualify for a world tournament. We’re also here to show that a country may be small, may struggle financially, but if they are resilient, if they can endure struggle, they can also stand shoulder to shoulder with other major teams and with players who are on another level.”
As a World Cup debutante, very few pundits, media, or observers gave Cape Verde much of a chance of making an impact or accruing any points. But they have had other things in mind.
“You show up, you believe, and we work very hard as a team,” Cape Verde defender Stopira said. “I think all the world can see we play, we play very good, and we also have quality in the team. So now it’s on to the next game, and to try to reach the next one.”

Vozinha, whose Instagram following rocketed from 40,000 to 14.6 million over several days, became an instant international sensation.
Vozinha, whose given name is Josimar Dias, was in tears after the match due to personal reasons. His mother, Ana Candida Evora, could not travel to the game because of the high cost of obtaining a U.S. visa.
“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents, and unfortunately, they were not here; they died a few years ago,” he said. “They were everything for me, for my life. I also cried because my mum didn’t manage to be here because of the visa. Because of the money we had to pay for the visa, we didn’t manage to [get it done] on time. I would like her to be here, but I’m also very happy.”
“I have worked my whole life for this moment. I’m 40 years old. I started playing football professionally when I was 25, in 2012. I thought about leaving but I continued because of this dream. This is for everyone. I was named man of the match but this is for all of my teammates because without them nothing would be possible. I will continue to work for Cape Verde and for the people."

Evora will get another opportunity to witness her son in action on June 26. That’s when the Blue Sharks and Vozinha face Saudi Arabia in their final Group H match in Houston. Thanks to the two draws and two points, the Blue Sharks are still in contention for a spot in the Round of 32.
If they can reach the knockout round, that would be yet another historic accomplishment for the darlings of the World Cup.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation has been very unsettled for the last 18 months, and we still won't know for sure for another 4-6 at least. Kyler Murray could work out and extend in Minnesota, or he could flame out, and Minnesota turns back to J.J. McCarthy. With there being so much uncertainty around the quarterback room, should the Vikings take a shot on Texas Tech's Brendan Sorsby?
Sorsby has been in a legal battle with the NCAA over his eligibility after being caught gambling on games he played in, which is a major violation. After earning his eligibility back, he would decide to enter the NFL's supplemental draft anyway. Here's what his stats look like from last season:
I can understand the appeal of Sorsby. He has a live arm that can layer the throws when he needs to with his strength. He has upside with his legs, which is becoming more standard in the NFL. The accuracy needs some work, but with a clean pocket, he can hit all the throws he needs to. Minus a tick of an accuracy difference, he reminds me of Murray in their playstyles, to an extent.
It would likely cost a day two pick, probably a third-rounder, but if this front office has any questions about the direction of this quarterback room, I could see Minnesota pulling the trigger for another injection of juice into this room.

Quarterbacks are by far the most difficult position to scout in football, and maybe sports in general. Projections are difficult, as schemes, playbooks, understanding, and digesting the offense are exponentially harder than in college. However, as things stand, we could be looking at six quarterbacks taken in round one in the 2027 NFL Draft, and arguably the best one is Oregon's Dante Moore. Let's talk about it.
Dante Moore lands as my QB1 for my early 2027 NFL Draft rankings, but we could see a ton of movement on this list as the season beings. He brings the highest floor of the prospects in the class, but his upside is capped as of now. Once he learns to let things rip and trust his skill, the ceiling will be very high.

Impatient Marlins welcome back Griffin Conine, DFA disappointing Christopher Morel originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Miami Marlins have been waiting.
The impatient franchise marked its time until Griffin Conine healed enough to come off the 60-day injured list. The outfielder injured his hamstring attempting to make a defensive play against the Cincinnati Reds on April 9.
Meanwhile, infielder Christopher Morel tested the front office's patience a bit too long. An offseason free-agent acquisition, Morel was expected to provide power to the Marlins' lineup, signing a one-year, $2 million deal.
He batted .162 and failed to generate a home run for 22 games.
With Conine healthy and ready to be activated, the Marlins designated Morel for assignment before Sunday's 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants at loanDepot park.
Slugger Liam Hicks (back) was also placed on IL.
Marlins' Griffin Conine replaces Christopher MorelConine batted second and went 0-for-4 with one strikeout. Kyle Stowers scored both runs, including a second-inning home run off underrated starting pitcher Logan Webb (4-5), who completed an 8-inning outing after yielding two earned runs on five hits.
The Marlins quit waiting for Morel to produce. The five-year big leaguer had remained on the bench since June 10, an 0-for-4 performance against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Morel opened the regular season on the IL after sustaining an oblique injury in late March. Activated on April 27, Morel failed to flash the early-career power he displayed with the Chicago Cubs, collecting 60 combined homers from 2022-24.
"Coming into the season, we had the high hopes that Christopher could turn around the talent ability that he has and kind of refine the '22, '23 version, and it just didn't happen," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said, as reported by ESPN. "The injury Opening Day set him back and the opportunities he had here became more limited over the last week to 10 days."
Hicks, the Marlins' leader in home runs (13) and RBI (53), was a late scratch Sunday.
Can Conine fill the voids?
More MLB news:Omar Marmoush played a significant attacking role as Egypt recorded a crucial victory on Sunday evening against New Zealand.
Egypt created history in the World Cup by coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1, securing both their first-ever tournament victory and an unprecedented spot in the last 32.
The All Whites dared to dream of their own maiden tournament win when Finn Surman rose highest in the 15th minute to head home a perfectly placed corner from Tim Payne. However, just as they had done by squandering advantages in their draw with Iran, the Kiwis collapsed under pressure in the second half, allowing the Pharaohs to take complete control of Group G.
The tactical transformations introduced by manager Hossam Hassan flipped the script, sparking a blitz of three Egyptian goals in the span of just 24 second-half minutes. Mostafa Zico initiated the fightback in the 58th minute, nodding home a precise cross from Mohamed Hany.
Mohamed Salah then took centre stage to completely dismantle the New Zealand defence, playing a slick, intricate one-two with Zico inside the penalty area before coolly slotting a low finish into the bottom corner to put the Africans ahead for the first time.
The former Liverpool talisman turned provider in the 82nd minute, delivering a pinpoint corner for substitute Trezeguet to head home and seal the historic result.
The momentous victory – arriving in Egypt’s fourth-ever World Cup appearance since their debut back in 1934 – means Hassan’s side can officially win the group if they defeat Iran this coming Saturday.
Conversely, a dejected New Zealand outfit remains winless on the global stage and must pull off a massive upset against Belgium in their final group fixture to have any hope of progressing.

One of the most hyped quarterback prospects since Caleb Williams took the field in 2025, and his name is Arch Manning. While last season was rockier than some might have expected, there was a lot to like on his tape. There is a ton to like about Manning, but consistency will be key for him to take that next step and be on top of the quarterback rankings entering the 2027 NFL Draft.
Both things can be true: Arch Manning struggled with accuracy early in the season, and he was let down tremendously with drops by his receivers. A second season in this offense was critical for his development, and we will get the chance to see how much growing up Manning did this offseason, as Texas looks to be one of the favorites in 2026.
