Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has been a coach in the NFL for a long time. So, he has gone against a lot of different quarterbacks and got to see Bears quarterback Caleb Williams improve last year.

This season, however, Allen thinks head coach and offensive playcaller Ben Johnson has this offense way ahead of where they were last season.

“I think offensively we’re night and day above where we were at this point in time in training camp last year, and I think we’re probably ahead of where we were at the end of the season last year from an offensive standpoint,” Allen said.

"I think Caleb’s understanding of the offense, command of the huddle, his communication, you’ve seen all of that improve," Allen said. "Then, to go along with that, you see him getting through progressions and getting to the right spots. I think Ben said this last year, but growth is not a linear process. It’s kind of like the stock market a little bit. There’s going to be some ups and downs, but hopefully it continues to grow as you go along. And I’ve seen a lot of growth out of him. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in these joint practices. I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s going to do this season."

Williams and the offense have made noticeable strides in Year 2 of Ben Johnson's offense, where they've run a smoother operation and Williams has been more accurate with the football. There are still questions at left tackle, where Braxton Jones is the favorite to win the job. But the hope is the offense can get off to a much faster start this season.

There is no sugar coating it, the Atlanta Braves have sputtered on offense this month. Only eight teams have scored fewer runs in MLB. They are facing the best pitcher on the planet right now in Jacob Misiorowski, in dire need of a win as the Phillies are creeping up the standings.

The Braves have only had three players with a wRC+ over league average for the month of August, and those players are Matt Olson, Mike Yastrzemski, and Austin Riley. Because of this, it has been interesting to see what the lineup will be everyday.

Dominic Smith was great to start the season, but has struggled mightily for some time now. One of the biggest head scratchers that fans point out is why he keeps getting at-bats. He has a wRC+ 36.0 percent below league average this month better than only Albies, Murphy, and Jarvis.

This trend continued today, but fortunately Dubón is at SS instead of Jarvis.

No player in today’s lineup has faced Misiorowski in more than three ABs, and none of them have an OPS higher than .666. Maybe one of the reasons Smith got the start is he is one of the four Braves to hit a single of The Miz. The other three players to hit a single are Albies, Dubón, and Riley. Interestingly, two of the three hottest hitters this month for the Braves are hitting eighth and ninth.

The Brewers are bringing a solid lineup against Sale.

Chourio has a .917 OPS against Sale in his career in twelve ABs. We also need to keep an eye on Contreras, Ortiz, and Vaughn. All three of these hitters have an OPS north of .803 in seven or more ABs.

The Braves need to score early if they want to win. The Brewers’ bullpen has been the best in MLB since the start of the month in terms of ERA, and it is not even close.

First pitch is at 4:10 EDT.

Atletico Madrid CEO Gil Marin has spoken out on the Julian Alvarez transfer saga once again in a statement that may well finally spell the end of Barcelona’s interest in the player.

Marin has once again said Atletico have no intention of selling Alvarez, despite the forward saying during the World Cup he wants to leave, and also responded to Joan Laporta’s claim that Barca’s offer wasn’t unlimited.

“Atlético, like all great clubs, is built with great players, and I’m certain that Julián is one, as well as a great professional. We must compete based on our values, with homegrown talent and with the best players from outside that we can bring in,” he told EFE .

“My opinion is clear, the club’s will is clear, we have made this clear to the player and his agent, and to the Barça president. I have no doubt that Atlético is the right place in the world for Julián, and Julián is the perfect striker for Atlético Madrid. We want to keep him,

“I simply heard some statements from the president (Laporta), saying that his offer wasn’t open-ended. And our response is that our answer is indeed open-ended; we don’t want to transfer him. We didn’t accept the €100 million offer, nor will we accept one of €150 million or €200 million.”

Marin went on to say that Alvarez would stay at the club and insisted he had not had the best people advising him throughout the summer.

“We are going to help Julián and continue to take care of him so that he can give us his full potential, because we need him to keep competing among the best in Europe. We must understand that Julián hasn’t had the best advisors around him regarding his professional career in recent months,” he added.

“That other clubs and their affiliated media tell us what to do, dictate our sporting strategy, and disrespect us. That’s precisely what they want: to divide us. It’s clear we’re not as powerful as them, but we have values. We Atlético fans won’t allow them to corrupt us. Atleti is strong when we’re all together.”

Barcelona must surely now look elsewhere for a new forward, while Alvarez looks destined to stay and faces a tough time after riling many Atletico fans by asking to leave.

After Choctaw's 15-13 loss at Mosley opened up the season Thursday, we have a full slate of games Friday night.

We have Niceville welcoming Alabama powerhouse Prattville to a sold-out Eagle Stadium, while Crestview hosts perennial playoff qualifier Lincoln over at Jack Foster Stadium. South Walton's run at 10-0 begins by welcoming Gulf Breeze to the light show at the Hawks Nest, while Bobby Johns' Freeport Bulldogs travel to Arnold in a statement game. At Steve Riggs Stadium, Josh Pulliam looks to make a statement of his own as the Vikings welcome Pensacola High.

Elsewhere, Walton hosts West Florida looking to avenge last year's 35-6 defeat, while Navarre hits the road for perennial power Florida High. Meanwhile Destin hosts Port St. Joe, while 1A powerhouse Baker begins a new era versus Jay at Doug Griffith Memorial Stadium.

CHAPEL HILL — Long before Billy Edwards Jr. was named UNC football's starting quarterback, his teammates noticed the qualities that made him a leader.

Wide receiver Trech Kekahuna saw it first hand at Wisconsin in 2025, when Edwards' season was cut short after just 34 snaps because of a season-ending knee injury. Despite the setback, Edwards remained a constant presence from the sidelines.

“A majority of players, when they get hurt, they kind of isolate themselves from the room. Billy, he’s not that type of player,” said Kekahuna, who will get to play with Edwards again when the Tar Heels face TCU in Ireland to kick off the 2026 college football season.

“He was always on the sideline motivating us. Whether he was in shoulder pads or not, every time we would go out, he’d just say, ‘Hey, next-play mentality.’ He’s just always coaching up the little things.”

Kekahuna and fellow wide receiver Mason Humphrey, a Lehigh transfer, have seen Edwards lean into that vocal leadership on and off the field. It’s not a surprising trait for a player who has more than 1,000 snaps as a starter across four seasons in the Big Ten.

“He’s always vocal. He always wants to be better,” Kekahuna said.

“Whether it’s a Cover Two and he wants you to come snap inside, just little things like that, little minute things to get separation, he’s always just a coaching type of player. … He just tries to bring you under his wing.”

Humphrey, a 6-foot-4 target on the outside for Edwards, says he “didn’t know who was gonna be QB 1” for the Tar Heels, but “whoever won it, they deserved it.” When asked about what Edwards brings as a QB, Humphrey noted the veteran has a “good deep ball” and “all around, Billy’s a great player.”

Off the field, Humphrey sees the funny side of Edwards as a guy capable of bringing together teammates through shared experiences. On the field, Humphrey added, “it’s straight business” and “fiery” leadership from Edwards.

“He definitely takes control, even during practice. That’s the first thing that I noticed when I got here: he took control of the huddle,” Humphrey said. “He’ll talk with you after practice, like, ‘Let’s watch this, let’s look at this, let’s get this route better.’ He just loves the game. I love seeing that from a quarterback, especially being a transfer. I know he’s gonna do good.”

UNC coach Bill Belichick noted that Edwards has been “a little more consistent” and brings plenty of experience, something a pair of returners in wide receiver Jordan Shipp and running back Jaylen McGill have noticed throughout the offseason.

“Billy’s an older guy, a lot more experienced,” Shipp said. “He’s seen a lot of different defenses. … He’s played a lot of football.”

McGill echoed those thoughts, adding "you can tell Billy has a lot of experience. He throws a catchable ball. … I’m very excited to see what Billy does this year.”

For Kekahuna, "happy" is the word that keeps coming to mind as Edwards readies for a return against the Horned Frogs in Dublin.

“I’ve seen Billy come a long way. … Happy to see him staying healthy, making plays,” Kekahuna said. “Just seeing him push through those hard times is what we need in a quarterback. Happy to be out there with him.”

After minicamp, weeks of training camp and a trip to New Orleans, the Jacksonville Jaguars are ready for their first game in front of the home crowd in the 2026 preseason.

The Jaguars kick off against the Carolina Panthers at EverBank Stadium in rare Friday night NFL football, at 7 p.m. Aug. 21. This game opens the last season at the Bank, which will have reduced capacity this year, before its scheduled reopening as the Stadium of the Future in 2028.

Unlike the Aug. 15 game against the New Orleans Saints, when head coach Liam Coen elected to rest the Jaguars' first-stringers, starters like quarterback Trevor Lawrence could see at least some action against Carolina. Their status wasn't yet certain as of Friday morning.

It's crowded atop the leaderboard through 36 at the CPKC Women's Open in Alberta, Canada, but there's a surprise name among those in the hunt.

That would be Kiara Romero, playing her first LPGA tournament this since turning pro. The McCormack Medal, awarded to the world's top-ranked amateur, gave Romero the 20 points needed to become the second graduate of the LPGA’s LEAP program, joining two-time LPGA winner Lottie Woad. Romero will forgo her senior season at Oregon to live the life of a pro golfer.

And so far, so good. With her brother Kyreece on the bag, who will finish his college studies online and caddie full-time for her, Kiara followed up Thursday's 64 with a Friday 67. She sits 9 under, in a three-way tie for the lead through two rounds.

Kiara Romero and her caddie and brother Kyreece Romero walk off of the ninth tee during the first round of the 2026 CPKC Women's Open at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alberta.

She had six birdies Thursday and was bogey-free in the tournament until her ninth hole Friday. She started on No. 10 in the second round and made another bogey on the sixth, but she collected five birdies Friday, giving her 11 overall at Royal Mayfair Golf Club.

Soo Bin Yoo of Korea and Yuri Yoshida of Japan are tied with Romero for the lead. Romero is trying to follow Woad in another way, as Woad was the last LPGA golfer to win her first event on the circuit after turning pro. Romero has put herself in position to match that.

Why Klay Thompson is signing with Heat instead of Lakers, Warriors after Mavericks buyout originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

After being bought out by the Mavericks on Friday afternoon, Klay Thompson swiftly found a new home for the 2026-27 season.

The sharpshooting guard agreed terms to a deal with the Heat, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The 36-year-old is the latest addition to a new-look Miami side spearheaded by Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Thompson reportedly commanded serious interest from the Heat's front office, emerging as a top target for the franchise after Antetokounmpo's arrival. He should fold nicely into Erik Spoelstra's side, which looked desperate for shooting help last season.

With that, here's what you need to know about Thompson's signing.

Why Klay Thompson is signing with Heat

Thompson landed with the Heat after clearing waivers following his contract buyout on Friday, per Charania. He reportedly initiated the transaction, informing Dallas' front office of his desire to play for a contender.

Slated to earn $17.5 million in the final year of the three-year, $50 million deal he inked with the Mavericks via sign-and-trade, Thompson was Miami's top target, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon. The organization coveted him following Antetokounmpo's acquisition.

The logic behind bringing in Thompson is simple. Miami was left with precious little outside shooting after the Antetokounmpo trade. Thompson, a career 40.9% shooter form deep, spaces the floor like few others in league history.

While Thompson's skills have waned, he remains one of the league's elite marksmen. He canned 38.3% of his three-point attempts last year. He should provide floor spacing for Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo to operate.

Klay Thompson contract details

The terms of Thompson's contract have yet to be revealed. He should collect a healthy payout as per the terms of his buyout with the Mavs. According to Spotrac, Miami has about $10 million of first apron space to work with. Thompson could ostensibly ink an mid-level exception to join the Heat's ranks. The taxpayer MLE for the upcoming season sits at a little over $6 million, according to Real GM.

Klay Thompson career stats
  • 18.6 points per game
  • 3.4 rebounds per game
  • 2.2 assists per game
  • 0.8 steals per game
  • 0.5 blocks per game
  • 1.6 turnovers per game
  • 44.8 percent field goal shooting
  • 40.9 percent 3-point shooting
  • 85.8 percent free throw shooting
Klay Thompson age

Thompson is 36 years old. He'll turn 37 during the 2026-27 season.

Despite his relatively advanced age, Thompson has stayed fairly durable in recent campaigns. He has played at least 69 games in each of his past four seasons.
